Abstract
Of the four kinds of causes which Aristotle sees as jointly necessary to comprehensive
explanation of the observed phenomena of the world, it is final causes, with the integral
involvement of ends or goals, which seem to be most difficult to reconcile with
contemporary conceptions. This paper explores some of the issues arising and takes
some initial steps towards such reconciliation. The aim is to develop a coherent picture
built upon an Aristotelian foundation, rather than establish a definitive interpretation
or critique.
