Desmond O’Connor is Professor of Italian in the Department of Languages,
School of Humanities at Flinders. He has published studies on lexicography and
on Italian and Italian-Australian poetry, and is widely recognised for his research
and publications on the settlement of Italians in South Australia. His most well-known
books are No need to be afraid, Italian settlers in South Australia between
1839 and the second world war (Kent Town SA, Wakefield Press, 1996) and A
History of Italian and English Bilingual Dictionaries (Florence, Olschki,
1990). He recently edited a volume of essays on South Australia’s Italians
entitled Memories and Identities. Proceedings of the Second Conference on
the Impact of Italians in South Australia (Adelaide, Australian Humanities
Press, 2004).
