The susceptibility testing methods used included Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion, Etest MIC, broth microdilution MIC, and a modification of the microdilution method in which Acanthamoeba cells were added to simulate the effect of a professional phagocytic cell on test outcome. In a semiquantitative validation coculture series, the majority of bacteria were intracellular up to a multiplicity of infection of 10 bacteria to one ameba. The optical density and bacterial count (log10 CFU/ml) correlated across the range tested (r2 0.77; P < 0.0001). Susceptibility test results were compared against clinical outcomes. The MICs of ceftazidime were consistently higher than those of meropenem by all three methods. The MICs of both agents were significantly higher when Acanthamoeba trophozoites were added to the broth microdilution method. Conventional and intracellular MIC results were consistent for clinical isolates from the Western Australian outbreak cluster despite the wide variety of clinical outcomes. Further development of the intracellular MIC method is expected to help assess the efficacy of antimicrobial agents on this bacterial species in an intracellular setting.Item Climate or host availability: what determines the seasonal abundance of ticks?(2008) Kleindorfer, Sonia Marie; Oorebeek, MargotItem Analysis of the Endophytic Actinobacterial Population in the Roots of Wheat (Triticum aestivum) by Terminal Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism and Sequencing of 16S rRNA Clones(2004) Franco, Christopher Milton; Conn, VanessaItem Effects of long-term benzene pollution on bacterial diversity and community structure in groundwater.(2005) Fahy, Anne; Lethbridge, Gordon; Earle, Richard; Ball, Andrew Stephen; Timmis, Kenneth N; McGenity, Terry JItem Heterogeneous aerobic benzene-degrading communities in oxygen-depleted groundwaters(2006) Fahy, Anne; McGenity, Terry J; Timmis, Kenneth N; Ball, Andrew StephenItem Stabilization of water/gas oil emulsions by desulfurizing cells of Gordonia alkanivorans RIPI90A(2007) Ball, Andrew Stephen; Mohebali, Ghasemali; Kaytash, Ashk; Rasekh, BehnamItem Marine bacterial organisation around point-like sources of amino acids(2003) Mitchell, James Gordon; Barbara, G MItem Co-operative actions and degradation analysis of purified xylan-degrading enzymes from Thermomonospora fusca BD25 on oat-spelt xylan(2003) Tuncer, M; Ball, Andrew StephenItem Screening of Australian native grasses for rhizoremediation of aliphatic hydrocarbon-contaminated soil(2008) Gaskin, Sharyn Elizabeth; Soole, Kathleen Lydia; Bentham, Richard HenryItem Lessons from the genome sequence of Neurospora crassa: tracing the path from genomic blueprint to multicellular organism(2004) Borkovich, Katherine A; Alex, Lisa A; Yarden, Oded; Freitag, Michael; Turner, Gloria E; Read, Nick D; Seiler, Stephan; Bell-Pedersen, Deborah; Paietta, John; Plesofsky, Nora; Plamann, Michael; Goodrich-Tanrikulu, Marta; Schulte, Ulrich; Aramayo, Rodolfo; O'Rourke, Rebecca; Bowring, Frederick James; Yeadon, Patricia Jane; Ishii, Chizu; Suzuki, Keiichiro; Sakai, Wataru; Pratt, Robert J; Mannhaupt, Gertrud; Nargang, Frank E; Radford, Alan; Selitrennikoff, Claude P; Galagan, James E; Dunlap, Jay C; Loros, Jennifer J; Catcheside, David Edward; Inoue, Hirokazu; Polymenis, Michael; Selker, Eric U; Sachs, Matthew S; Marzluf, George A; Paulsen, Ian T; Davis, Rowland; Ebbole, Daniel J; Zelter, Alex; Kalkman, Eric R
