He produced important surviving contributions in optics, harmonics and other areas. He produced a work on astrology, regarded as an important science in antiquity. However, his most significant contributions were in geography and astronomy. In both areas, he produced texts which were to survive as the canonical texts for more than twelve hundred years.Item Politics and Greek Education in South Australia(Flinders University Department of Languages - Modern Greek, 2001) Ganzis, NicholasThe first intimation that a child of Greek descent in Australia is likely to get about its community’s involvement in politics beyond that internal to the Greek community is the presence of non-Greek non-Orthodox “political personalities” at Greek Orthodox Church services on days special to the Greek ethnos such as 25 March, Greece’s National Day, when officially Greeks celebrate the first stage of their liberation from centuries of Ottoman Turkish occupation.Item Hellenic Language and Culture Study in South Australian Schools: Parents' Perspectives(Flinders University Department of Languages - Modern Greek, 2001) Papademetre, Leo; Routoulas, StephenIn this study, thirty parents of Hellenic background, born and educated in South Australia, share their current self-defined, bilingual and bicultural aspirations for the educational future of their children. One way they achieve this is by painting a picture through metaphor of that society in the present, as well as in the past and the future. The examination of metaphor in the political discourse of Georgios Papadopoulos and the analysis of it is an attempt to determine how the manipulation of such rhetoric can be effective, if at all, in a given social, historical and political context.Item Το “χειροποίητο” στην τέχνη και η ψηλαφητή αίσθηση του Πραγματικού(Flinders University Department of Languages - Modern Greek, 2001) Palaktsoglou, MariaPlease note: this article is in Greek.Item Η αλληλογραφία ως γραμματολογική πηγή: Νίκος Καζαντζάκης μέσα από την αλληλογραφία Ζερβού – Πρεβελάκη (1945–1958)(Flinders University Department of Languages - Modern Greek, 2001) Frazis, GeorgePlease note: this article is in Greek.Item New Trends in Greece in the 1990s: an Essay in Contemporary History(Flinders University Department of Languages - Modern Greek, 2001) Close, David HenryEven though complete success is impossible, it is worth trying to see the recent past from the perspective of the distant future. This results in the development of a nation that is characterised by its openness, its vitality and its dynamism. Importantly, a diversity of cultural inputs contributes to the development of a society of a distinctive character, thereby enabling Australia to project itself to the world community as a powerful cultural entity in its own right and not merely a derivative, colonial one.Item Kartzilamas: Traditional Greek Cypriot Dance as a Representation of Life(Flinders University Department of Languages - Modern Greek, 2001) Moustrides, DhoraThis investigation stems from an analysis of Greek Cypriot dance conducted for a thesis entitled Processes in the Development of Patterns Relevant to Marriage Partner Choice amongst Greek Cypriots. An additional twenty or so Greek Cypriots in Adelaide and about ten in Melbourne as well as a few people from other European countries have been questioned specifically for this paper.
