Abstract

Greek Diaspora Policy during the first half of the 20th century: Historical developments are undoubtedly the main factor in the design or revision of a state’s policy towards its diaspora. This paper explores Greece’s concern with its diaspora as part of its national policy in the first half of the 20th century; it investigates the interplay between the diaspora and the migration policy of the Greek state during that period of time; and, it examines the historical turning points and their repercussions on homeland-diaspora relations The main argument of this paper is that the involvement of the Greek state in the diaspora issue cannot be explained simply by a resurgence of nationalism in the interwar society or by policy makers’ attempt to prevent the alienation of “overseas Greeks” from the nation.
