The Influence of the Environmental Movement in Greece
(Flinders University Department of Languages - Modern Greek, 1997) Close, David Henry
The view generally to be found in the scholarly literature on the environmental movement in Greece is that it has little influence, and that there is little public awareness of environmental issues. It will be argued in this paper that the view is very misleading, because it fails to take into account developments which began in the early 1970s and accelerated in the 1990s.

Cultural Patterning: Ingrained Core Values in the Dress and Behaviour of Greek Cypriot Men and Women
(Flinders University Department of Languages - Modern Greek, 1997) Moustrides, Dhora
This paper considers Greek Cypriot identity. The mentality with regard to traditional forms of dress and behaviour that existed among the bulk of Greek Cypriots in Cyprus at the beginning of this century is set against attitudes toward change that began at the turn of the century and progressively intensified thereafter. The objective is to identify the roots of the development and thus explain the meaning of the values.

Linguistic Unity in the Balkans: More Questions than Answers
(Flinders University Department of Languages - Modern Greek, 1997) Close, Elizabeth Anne
There are many similarities between the languages of the Balkan Peninsula, some superficial, others so profound that they must result from prolonged periods of popular and learned bilingualism. It is the aim of the present study to analyse some aspects of this so-called Balkan Linguistic Union which may be solely or partly a result of Greek influence, and to suggest lines of research which may help to interpret them.

Thales: Some Problems in Early Greek Science and Philosophy
(Flinders University Department of Languages - Modern Greek, 1997) O'Grady, Patricia Frances
This paper is based on a thesis which aimed firmly to establish Thales as the first Western scientist and philosopher, investigating all aspects of his accomplishments. It was an interdisciplinary project, involving research into philosophy, history, classics, mathematics, science, and geography.

Keyword Mnemonic in Modern Greek Language Acquisition
(Flinders University Department of Languages - Modern Greek, 1997) Touloumtzoglou, Joanna
The focus of this study was to assess whether the keyword method could be used as part of a regular teaching regime in a Greek language class. Questions to be addressed were: (a) how could the training of students in the keyword method be embedded in a classroom setting; and (b) how could this method be taught to facilitate learners' memory, demonstrating to the students a strategy both for retrieval and learning which could prove a most powerful tool in vocabulary acquisition.

The Commodification of the Anastenaria: The Effects of Tourism in Lagadhas
(Flinders University Department of Languages - Modern Greek, 1997) Sansom, Jane
The Anastenaria is a firewalking ritual performed in towns and villages in and around Thessaloniki in the north of Greece. The ritual was originally performed by Greek Orthodox Christians in villages in what was then the north-eastern part of Turkish Thrace. The Anastenarides performed their ritual in private for over twenty years, in fear of persecution from the Church and the local population. But in 1947, the Anastenaria was performed publicly for the first time and since that day has become known across the world.

Not Just a Waltzed Matilda. A Study of Migration and Culture: Greek Women in South Australia, Post-World War II to the Present
(Flinders University Department of Languages - Modern Greek, 1997) Whitehead, Katherine
This paper examines the history of post-war female migration from Greece, with specific reference to South Australia, and analyses the stereotype of Greek women as wives of Greek migrants. This includes factors influencing migration, the Migration Act (1958), and cultural and feminist aspects.

Fact Versus Fiction. Researching Ethnic Groups in Australia
(Flinders University Department of Languages - Modern Greek, 1997) Kanarakis, George
While there is a general perception regarding research of a purely scientific nature (as in the fields of medicine, chemistry, nuclear physics, etc.), in that it is understood to involve the collection of data through experimentation, observation and other strictly controlled means, the demands of other types of scholarly research are not so widely comprehended. To the uninitiated, scholarly research may look simple in theory, but in practice it is a demanding and complex enterprise which is not undertaken lightly, and incorporates a multitude of concerns and difficulties.

Hellenic Research Studies and Scholarly Sources in Australia
(Flinders University Department of Languages - Modern Greek, 1997) Tamis, Anastasios M
Research in Hellenic Studies in Australia has a history of over one hundred years, dating from the establishment of the Departments of Ancient Greek Studies in the Universities of Sydney and Melbourne. However, no interest was officially displayed in Modern Greek language, civilisation or culture until 1968, when the Department of Classical Studies in the University of New England recognised the need to accommodate Modern Greek studies, incorporating literature and folklore. 1968 was ironically the tragic year when most European countries, as well as Australia, reassessed the importance of classical languages, undervaluing their priority in education curriculum planning and vocational enhancement.
